OUR PROJECTS

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE

Resin Sculpture

The top of this glass fibre reinforced polyester (GRFP) artwork was damaged during transportation. The missing part was recreated by taking a mould of original surface. The insert was carried out in stable epoxy, and the heavily cracked area around the loss was repaired. The treated area was locally airbrushed to ensure the repair was unnoticeable upon viewing the sculpture.

Painted Sculpture

This painted aluminium outdoor sculpture suffered impact damage on a prominent corner. An invisible repair to damaged paint and filler layers was carried out.

Reinforced Concrete Sculpture

The original surface coating on this large outdoor sculpture had deteriorated. After thorough conservation research, selective removal of the surface layer with dry-ice blasting, and re-application of lacquer, was carried out. Project was successfully completed for The Menil Collection (TMC), together with museum staff.

Steel Sculpture

Damage on this modern artwork consisted of bends in the thin metal rods, and breaks to the original and repaired brazed joints. Metal rods were reshaped and joints were adhered with epoxy adhesive, coloured, and then shaped to appear exactly as the original joints.

BRONZES

Bronze Sculpture

This small sculpture showed signs of copper and iron corrosion resulting from flood damage. Copper corrosion was carefully removed from the bronze surface, and rust removal treatment carried out on the internal fittings

Bronze Thunderbolt

This small bronze thunderbolt showed signs of copper corrosion resulting from polishing residue and surface dirt due to flooding. The object was carefully cleaned, and a wax coating applied.

Outdoor Bronze

For this outdoor bronze, the surface was cleaned using biodegradable, conservation-grade detergents and soft brushes. After carefully drying the surface (crucial in high humidity climates), a surface wax coating was applied.  This is maintained once to twice a year.

FINE METALS AND ENAMEL

Antique Silver

The silver was badly tarnished, and required careful polishing by hand to restore its appearance. Polishing by hand allows for a graduated effect which makes the original repoussé craftsmanship easier to read.

Bronze & Metal Inlay

This small bronze vase had a beautiful precious metal inlay, but the surface was heavily tarnished due to flood damage. The object was partially re-patinated to restore the surface.

Cloisonné Enamel & Gold

This piece suffered losses and cracks to the enamel. The lost areas were restored using fills, and the fills were retouched to match the surrounding area. Cracks in the enamel, and weakened parts of the gold structure were reshaped and consolidated. All repairs were carried out using reversible materials.

Gilt Bronze Chandelier

This chandelier suffered lots of sporadic bright green corrosion. It was treated with mechanical and chemical removal of the copper corrosion, local re-gilding with leaf gold and retouching to match its surrounding surfaces. This piece also required full dismantling, cleaning and re-wiring.

APPLIED ARTS

Ornaments on Cabinet

This lacquered wooden cabinet was missing certain stone and metal ornaments. Replacement ornaments were made with epoxy clay, which was then painted to match the originals. The replicas were attached to the stone backplate with a reversible adhesive.

Missing Veneer

This small cabinet was missing some of its antique turtle shell veneer from the wood-carved railing. Replicas using conservation grade materials were carried out and attached in a reversible manner. Original loose parts were re-attached using a reversible adhesive.

Ceramic Vessel

The broken fragments along the rim, and the hairline crack were treated with a reversible fill applied to the areas of loss. Retouching of the fill material was carried out to make the repair unnoticeable upon close viewing.
